If you’re getting ready to sell your home, one of the first things I recommend is simple: clear out the clutter.
Before you start buying new décor or planning improvements, take a look at what’s already in each room. Extra furniture, crowded countertops, personal photos, and everyday belongings can pull attention away from the home itself.
The goal is to give buyers room to see the space—and imagine how they might use it.
Help Buyers See the Home’s Possibilities
When buyers walk through your home, they’re trying to picture their own lives there. Where would their furniture go? How would they use the living room? Is there enough storage for their belongings?
A little breathing room can make those questions easier to answer. Clearing a countertop lets buyers see the work surface. Moving an extra chair can open a walkway. Simplifying a bookshelf can help the room feel less crowded.
You don’t need to empty the house. Start by removing the things that distract from its layout and features while keeping the space comfortable and usable.
Start With the Small Things
In my quick-tip video, I mention picture frames, furniture, room accessories, and even refrigerator magnets. These are easy things to overlook because you see them every day.
Walk through your home as if you’re seeing it for the first time. Pay attention to:
- Kitchen surfaces: Put away appliances and supplies you don’t use regularly, and simplify what’s displayed on the refrigerator.
- Living areas: Reduce extra accessories and consider storing furniture that crowds the room or blocks a natural walking path.
- Personal displays: Pack away some framed photos and collections so buyers can focus on the space around them.
- Bedrooms and bathrooms: Clear nightstands, dressers, and vanities while keeping daily essentials easy to reach.
- Closets and storage areas: Sort out items you no longer need so buyers can see how the storage is arranged.
Start with one room. You’ll have a manageable task and a clearer idea of what to tackle next.
Sort Your Belongings Before You Pack Them
Set aside time this week for a walkthrough. As you go, decide what you’ll keep using, what can be packed early, and what doesn’t need to come with you.
Use four simple groups:
- Keep accessible: Things you need while you’re still living in the home.
- Pack and store: Belongings you want to keep but won’t need before the move.
- Donate or give away: Usable items you no longer want.
- Discard or recycle: Broken or unwanted items, handled through appropriate disposal options.
Label boxes by room and contents as you pack. Keep them organized in a suitable storage area, and avoid filling another room so completely that buyers can’t see or walk through it.
Make Your Future Move Easier
Decluttering is also a head start on moving. Every item you sort now is one less decision to make when you’re preparing to leave.
You can pack belongings you rarely use, pass along things you no longer need, and keep your attention on the remaining steps of your sale. That preparation can be useful even if you’re still deciding when to list.
Decluttering is one part of getting a home ready. Pricing, condition, marketing, and market activity also affect the outcome, so preparation should fit your property and your plans.
